Name: Meredith Jenks
What's your sign?: Capricorn
Where were you born: Hollywood
How has this affected your aesthetic? And you as a person: I moved around a lot growing up, but we always went back to LA to visit family and friends over holidays and I eventually moved back for college and lived there for 11 years before moving to New York. Los Angeles is such a sunny laid back environment that it is hard not to let it creep into your personality/work, because of that people will guess that I am from Los Angeles from just looking at my photographs. I do feel like New York is creeping in a bit though. In a good way. :)
Favorite things you own: I have a lot of art from friends of mine. I love supporting the people around me that are doing awesome creative things. Right now my favorite piece is actually something my dad painted for me. He is an oil landscape painter and probably the reason I am a creative person. I had him paint a photograph of mine because I thought it would be cool to collaborate with him (photo below!).
Favorite thing about yourself: I like to have fun! I take my work seriously but I value my friendships very much and it is really important to me to make time for fun even if I am really busy.
What was the last picture you took?: Last professional shoot was an editorial for the J.Crew blog. Last iphone pic was a video of my dogs right when I opened the door after being out all day. I just love their happy wiggly bodies!
How do you deal with the blues?: I don't really get sad often, but when I do it is hard to get out of that funk. I just try to remember how lucky I am. I might have a slow period of work or things aren't working out quite right but I try to remind myself that in the grand scheme of things my life is pretty easy. I just generally try to avoid a pity party.
What did you eat for lunch today?: I haven't had lunch yet, but i'm craving a big beautiful salad. I do miss the salads in LA. I feel like most restaurants in new york have Greek, Cobb, or Caesar and that's it. I like salads that have lots of veggies and texture. . .that being said i will probably just make a quesadilla.
What is joy for you?: I love my home right now. A perfect night is hanging at home cozy on the couch with my two puppies and my boyfriend. It makes me really happy.
Advice for artists who are just beginning?: Being an artist for a living is not easy. You really have to love doing it to put up with all the highs and lows. If you stick with it through thick and thin you will eventually make it. So basically keep making art even if you have to take a job on the side to pay the bills.
